Training

JLPSC is an RYA Recognised Training Centre running combined five-day RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper courses throughout the year. Run by RYA accredited Instructors they offer a great value way to hone your sailing skills and gain a recognised qualification.

Which course is right for me?

Competent Crew courses can be done with little to no experience. The course is designed to teach you everything in the syllabus (see Competent Crew link).

The Practical Day Skipper course is an intermediate course which teaches you how to command and moor a yacht during daylight hours. You can apply for an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) from the RYA once you have your RYA Day Skipper ticket. The ICC will allow you to charter abroad. The pre-requisites to obtain your RYA Day Skipper ticket are to have completed the RYA Day Skipper Theory course AND five days on board, 100 miles travelled and four night hours.

What am I committing to?

Ideally you will join the boat the evening before the start of the course to familiarise yourself with the boat and meet your instructor and fellow candidates. Please check the dates below carefully to ensure you choose a course that fits you best.

How much does it cost?

Prices for these courses are as follows:

  • Partner/nominated beneficiary – RYA Competent Crew: £385*
  • Partner/nominated beneficiary RYA Day Skipper: £395*
  • Guest RYA – Competent Crew: £610*
  • Guest RYA – Day Skipper: £620*

* £50 non refundable deposit required to secure your place.

Crew size is limited to four trainees per course to maximise pupil/instructor contact time.

What’s included?

You’ll be primarily sailing in the Solent while learning and demonstrating the skills in the syllabus. All courses are very active where everyone will be expected to participate. We will provide lifejackets and waterproof jackets/trousers. The fee also includes meals aboard – although victualling the yacht may be a training task for our more experienced sailors and everyone will be expected to get involved with household tasks.  Drinks and treats are not included.
